The COVID-19 crisis significantly impacted EU tourism, halving nights spent in 2020 compared to 2019. Recovery began in 2021, with a gradual increase and further improvement in 2022, coming close to pre-pandemic levels, according to the latest data by Eurostat.
In 2022, the traditional seasonal pattern was observed, with the majority of nights spent recorded during the summer months. August saw the highest number of nights spent (18% of total nights spent in 2022; 478 million nights), closely followed by July (16%; 440 million). Spain, Italy, and Greece had the most nights spent by international guests during the summer, with 106 million, 97 million, and 66 million nights, respectively. For domestic guests during the summer, France led with 150 million nights, followed by Germany (125 million) and Italy (113 million).
